Dental Hygienists

Dental hygiene is a preventative style of dental treatment that aims to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums for life. It is a specific department within our practice.

What does a Dental Hygienist do and what is their role in the dental practice?

Dental Hygienists are specially trained members of our team who work in collaboration with the Dentist to provide complete integrated dental care. They play an important role in oral health by undertaking specific preventative care and by providing treatment of gum disease. Dr Harrison has a supervisory role at all times with every patient in the practice. He will examine patients at least annually if they are attending our hygiene department to review their progress.

Hygienists perform the following functions within our practice:

  1. Examination and treatment planning in association with Dr Harrison to formulate an individualised dental treatment and maintenance program specific to your needs.
  2. Dental hygiene education with one-on-one instruction for the care of your gums and teeth. This may include information on dietary habits and health conditions, which may be adversely affecting your oral health.
  3. Removal of calculus deposits and stains from the teeth.
  4. More advanced forms of gum therapy treatment when required.
  5. Obtaining x-rays where appropriate, application of decay preventing agents, recommendation of products for home use, tooth-whitening procedures, placement of fissure-sealants and impressions for mouth-guards and bite splints.

The utilisation of dental hygienists at Barkly Street Dental Group enables us to provide the highest quality of care and the greatest opportunity to maintain excellent oral health.
