General Dental Care

Regular dental care promotes a healthy mouth and body and reduces the risk of more major treatment in the long-term. Many people don’t go to see a Dentist until they have a problem. Unfortunately, a lack of pain or discomfort doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is healthy with your teeth and gums.

Only your Dentist can thoroughly and correctly diagnose any issues you may have with your teeth, gums and soft tissues of the mouth. We always start with a comprehensive dental examination. If any issues are detected we can then recommend treatment options as appropriate. We are proud to have a specific dental hygiene department within the practice to maintain our patient’s gums in the healthiest condition possible.

What’s involved in a comprehensive examination?

  • Obtaining a written record of your medical and dental history including any medications you may be taking (some medications will have a specific effect on your dental health and may alter the treatment we suggest for you).
  • A meticulous tooth-by-tooth examination to identify cavities, assess previous treatment and restorations and the current condition of each.
  • A thorough oral cancer screening
  • Dental radiographs (x-rays) if required to provide a comprehensive view of your teeth for decay screening and also to assess the root structures and supporting bone.
  • A periodontal examination, which includes a thorough screening and assessment of your gums to check for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease
  • A Temporo-Mandibular joint assessment to check for signs of clenching or grinding.
  • After the examination, if we have identified issues we will discuss the treatment alternatives with you and answer any questions you may have.
