Replacing Teeth

High-quality dental implants in Mornington

Patients from Mt Martha, Mt Eliza, Safety Beach and surrounds can now benefit from expert consultation and outstanding dental implant services at our Mornington Peninsula clinic.

Dental implants are often the sensible choice for patients who want to replace missing teeth. They are a permanent fixed solution, where the implant is placed into the gum and jawbone – the end result looks, feels and functions like real teeth. Whether you’re missing a single tooth, several teeth in the upper and lower arches, or have lost all your teeth, our Mornington dental team can help you to fully restore your smile with traditional implants or All On 4 Plus implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants serve to anchor replacement teeth into the jaw where a tooth or teeth are missing. This is commonly a single tooth but can also involve multiple teeth or even an entire arch of teeth.

Once an implant is secured into the jaw, surrounding bone tissue will fuse with it to create a strong foundation which is then able to support a dental crown, a dental bridge, or (if one or more implants are used) an entire arch of restorations.

Although dental implants offer the closest alternative to natural tooth replacement, patients should bear in mind that they are not always recommended in every situation for every patient. Some patients are not suitable for dental implant treatment due to their medical history, smoking habits, bite severity or lack of bone to support the implant properly. In these cases, we will provide you with an alternative solution that suits both your needs and requirements.

All On 4 Plus implants

We may recommend patients have All On 4 Plus dental implants. With appropriate information on jawbone composition from scans, we can undertake the All On 4 Plus methodology (sometimes known as All On 4, All-On-4, All-On-Four or All On Four), which requires only four implants across a whole row of teeth. Having dental implants using the All On 4 Plus approach makes good sense, as treatment and recovery times are significantly shorter than implants affixed using the conventional method.

Why we use Straumann dental implants

It is very important to be aware that not every dental implant surgery in Mornington is the same. There are dozens of manufacturers on the market and many of their implants have little long-term research or clinical data to support their claims of success. Their ability to retain the crown or bridge firmly over time also varies considerably due to their specific design.

We use what we consider to be the very best implant system in the world. This implant is manufactured by an innovative Swiss company called Straumann. We use this system exclusively because it has the most extensive clinical and scientific research data over more than 25 years. Straumann implants have a long-standing clinical success history and an outstanding surface treatment and coating.

Patients coming from surrounding suburbs including Mt Martha, Mt Eliza, Tuerong, Safety Beach and Dromana appreciate the Straumann product being used in their dental implants here at our Mornington clinic because of their solid reputation.

What can happen if teeth aren’t replaced

Teeth allow us to chew food – that’s their most obvious function. And without a full set teeth, people can find it harder to chew properly, and to receive the full enjoyment and nutrition benefits from eating.

Missing teeth can be a cosmetic concern – people may not feel comfortable smiling if there are gaps in their teeth.

And finally, when the jaw is missing a tooth or several teeth, structural problems can arise. When a tooth or teeth are missing from a jaw, existing teeth can move around, the jawbone can change shape and further teeth can be lost.

Steps of traditional dental implant surgery at our Mornington Peninsula clinic

The initial consultation

An initial consultation is critical to assess your suitability for implant treatment in Mornington. Dental surgery for implants requires x-rays to check the bone height in the area concerned. Impressions may also be required to fabricate a surgical guide. We may perform an additional scan (cone beam CT scan) to determine the bone thickness, height and density in the site and to assess surrounding anatomical structures.

Dental Implant surgery

Placement of the implant fixture is performed under local anaesthetic. This is a comfortable process and takes between 60-90 minutes. There is generally very little post-operative discomfort. Care needs to be taken to avoid pressure on the implant site for the first 2 weeks after placement to ensure optimal success of the dental implant surgery.

Bone healing process

A period of generally 8 weeks is required for the bone to fuse to the dental implant surface. At that time we will x-ray the implant, test it to confirm success and then take impressions for fabrication of the final crown or bridge. Our ceramist in Beaumaris performs all of our laboratory work.

Final crown or bridge fitting

3-4 weeks after the impressions have been taken, the final crown or bridge will be returned from our ceramic laboratory and fitted by our dentists.

Check for comfort

Once fitted, we will ensure that you feel completely comfortable with the new tooth/teeth in position and are able to bite easily.

How much do dental implants cost?

This will always be hard to define because the cost of dental implant surgery varies from case to case. There are so many different components involved in each step and every person’s situation is unique to them. For us to give you an accurate quote you will need to book an initial consultation with one of our dentists. We will give you an individual assessment and structure a treatment plan that best suits you. A variety of payment options are also available.

Dental implants – forging a partnership to success

With correct treatment planning and placement, implants have an extremely good long-term success rate. However, they do require maintenance both by the patient (with recommended oral hygiene procedures) and by us (to review the implant and restoration on a regular basis). When both aspects are achieved in unison, patients can expect their implants to last for many years to come.

It is important to note that smokers are at greater risk from dental implant surgery failure as are those who fail to maintain a healthy, regular oral hygiene maintenance routine at home and regular reviews with us. Therefore, patients will need to bear these factors in mind before committing to treatment.

If you have experienced tooth loss, it is good to know you have long-term sustainable options open to you. With the latest technology and the expertise of our team, we can ensure complete oral rehabilitation, as well as great aesthetics with our dental implants in Mornington.
